The start of Manhattan House is rooted in “the big, blue house on the gravel road.” Twenty-some years ago, it was surrounded (on all four sides) by farming fields. A family of 12 lived there… learning everything from phonics to economics. The spring brought an overpopulation of bunnies along with blooming tulips and daffodils that lined the walk to the front door and up the steps to a sprawling covered porch. In the summers, children splashed in the pool while smells of backyard grilling wafted through the warm air. Vegetable gardens flourished and “farm-to-table” happened there long before it hit mainstream society. Natural was always better in this household.
The fall was magnificent with colorful trees that lined the perimeter of the sprawling five acres… only to be replaced with twinkling Christmas lights and a snowy wonderland when winter rolled in. Baking was a daily occurrence and a perfected craft by hands young and old. There were always sweet treats and fresh breads at the family gatherings as new recipes were tried and exchanged. Handmade placecards assigned everyone to a seat, while carefully crafted gifts were exchanged by the tree.
Today… the gravel roads have been paved and the fields have slowly turned into a budding metropolis of subdivisions. But, the house, in all its glory… still stands… And holds the foundation that so many people, families, and businesses have built upon, including us.
